This spring Native Conservation Landscaping completed phase 3 of the slope rehabilitation project at Rosedale Conservancy! They removed all existing invasive plants, applied 100% biodegradable erosion control to stabilize the bank and aid in the establishment of new plants, and added all native plants and shrubs.

Phase 1 was work next to the driveway and Rosedale sign.
Phase 2 was work on the east end of the fence, to the right of the pedestrian gate.
Phase 3 was work on the western end of the fence, next to phase 1.

The 2025 Meeting will take place on Wednesday, May 21st at 8pm. Please use the ballot below to place your vote.
Thomas Schneider of Native Roots Conservation Landscaping is going to give a short slide talk at the membership meeting. The title of his presentation is “Rosedale, Native Plants, and Why.”

Dear Rosedale Conservancy Members,

It is time again to prepare for election of the Board of The Rosedale Conservancy. With this letter, I am forwarding the proposed slate of nominees for the Board. Those elected will serve two-year terms.

Note that our By-Laws provide that a member may nominate anyone not nominated by the Nominating Committee by means of a written nomination delivered (by email, USPS mail, or hand delivered) to the President (Jill Hall) within fifteen days of this notice. Note also that only Designated Property Members may nominate people to the slate of eight Designated Property Member Directors, and only Annual Members may nominate people to the slate of four Annual Member Directors.

After the nominations period is closed, you will receive a final ballot by email so that you can vote on the slate of your class of board members. (For further information about board membership categories, see background information below.)

We will hold the bi-annual meeting of the Conservancy’s membership in late-May by Zoom. Details of the meeting will be sent out with the final ballot.

Jill H. Hall, President

In April, Rosedale embarked on a the task of cleaning up the banks of land from the sidewalks up to the fences on Newark Street which are a tangle of invasive ivy, vinka, and other weeds. With the help of neighbor Shari Wilson (Nuts for Natives), we partnered with Thomas Schneider and Joni Miller of Native Conservation Landscaping to remove the overgrowth and replant the section with native plants. Why native? Because gardening with natives is better for our watershed, our woodlands, and our wildlife, especially birds. These plants will attract greater numbers and varieties of butterflies and birds bringing new life to Rosedale.

Rosedale hosted its first ever evening of jazz last night. The concert featured Imani and her Quartet, performing a mix of jazz standards and world music. Her illustrious talents have graced many albums and soundtracks and venues from Carnegie Hall, to Lincoln Center and the Kennedy Center. We were truly fortunate to have her perform at Rosedale!

Imani was backed by a quartet made up of DC’s top jazz talent, including Jon Ozment on keyboards, Tracey Cutler on saxes, Greg Holloway on drums, and Pepe Gonzalez on bass.
Another amazing turnout for outdoor live music on a gorgeous spring evening!
We want to thank Kristen Arant, the female musicians of the Bele Bele Rhythm Collective, and all who came out for this riveting performance. There was dancing on the lawn and a swarm of budding little drummers. Thank you for wearing masks, safely distancing, and for leaving the park so clean. We look forward to the next one!

Dear Rosedale Conservancy Members,

It is time again to prepare for election of the Board of The Rosedale Conservancy. With this letter, I am forwarding the proposed slate of nominees for the Board. Those elected will serve two-year terms.

Note that our By-Laws provide that a member may nominate anyone not nominated by the Nominating Committee by means of a written nomination delivered (by email, USPS mail, or hand delivered) to the President (Jill Hall) and the Secretary (Erin Sears) within fifteen days of this notice. Note also that only Designated Property Members may nominate people to the slate of seven Designated Property Member Directors, and only Annual Members may nominate people to the slate of three Annual Member Directors. (For further information on the Board structure, see the attached listing of Board nominees.)

After the nominations period is closed, you will receive a final ballot by email so that you can vote on the slate of your class of board members.

We will hold the bi-annual meeting of the Conservancy’s membership Monday, May 10 at 7:30 p.m. on Zoom (Zoom link will be sent to you in an email) at which the Board of Directors will be elected. We hope you will all attend, as your support for the Conservancy’s mission, goals and future is essential. After a brief membership meeting and election of a new board, Shari Wilson will give a short slide presentation, “Why Plant Native.” She lives in Cleveland Park and has a wealth of information that she will share. She also has a great website, www.nutsfornatives.com.

I look forward to “seeing” you at the membership meeting.
Best wishes,
Jill H. Hall, President

Background: The Rosedale Conservancy’s Articles of Incorporation provide for two classes of membership in the Conservancy. Thirty-seven property owners on property adjacent to or immediately surrounding the Rosedale Conservancy are Designated Property Members, and may elect seven of the Conservancy’s Directors. All other current dues-paying members are Annual Members and may elect three of the Conservancy’s Directors. Three other members of the Conservancy Board are appointed by three neighborhood organizations: the Cleveland Park Citizens Association, the Cleveland Park Historical Society, and Advisory Neighborhood Commission 3C.

Designated Property Member Nominees

Erica Fredericks
Erica has lived in Cleveland Park since 2011 with her husband, Andy Jones. They have two children, Henry (5) and Wellesley (2) who enjoy the family actives at Rosedale and attend neighborhood schools. Erica looks forward to continuing to support her community and welcome new families and opportunities to Rosedale.

Alyse Graham
Alyse lives with her husband and three kids on Ordway Street. They are an active family that treasures the outdoors and being part of a strong local community. Alyse has enjoyed becoming involved with Rosedale activities, including the pumpkin carving party, the annual picnic, and the fundraiser. She is delighted to share in helping to preserve and continue community enjoyment of Rosedale.

Jill Hall
Jill Hall and her husband, Ridge live at 3500 Ordway Street. They have three grown children, two daughters-in-law, and four grandchildren. The whole family enjoys the Conservancy. Jill is involved in a variety of community projects. Jill serves as president and Ridge serves on the Grounds Committee.

George Marcou
George and his wife Karen have lived at 3503 Newark Street on the north side of Rosedale since 2003. George and Karen have two boys, George (21) and Jack (19). George has done a great deal of volunteer work, including fundraising for various schools, Guy Mason Park and Rosedale.

Erin Sears
Erin Sears lives at 3529 Quebec Street and has been a Cleveland Park resident since 2006. She has two young children, Harrison (9) and Oliver (8). She has been a member of the Rosedale Board since 2015 and is the current Secretary. She helps organize and plan the family and kid-friendly activities, including the Annual June BBQ, Pumpkin Patch/Carving Party, laser tag, and Reptiles Alive presentation.

James (Jamie) Wickett
My wife Jessica, daughter Helen (age 17, at NCS), and I moved from Georgetown to Newark Street in Cleveland Park in 2015. Since then, we’ve added daughter Liza, now almost 3, to the family. We also have a dog, Lucy, and cat, Sylvester. We love living in Cleveland Park particularly because of the community of great neighbors, the beauty of the area, the convenience of the location, the Cathedral and of course Rosedale. I am a partner at the DC/London based law firm Hogan Lovells where I specialize in tax policy. I currently sit on the Board of the Cleveland Park Citizens Association. I have volunteered for many nonprofit organizations in DC over the years and appreciate the chance to help promote the conservation and enjoyment of our amazing village green.

Katie Wiegmann
Katie and her husband, Hack, moved to Ordway Street in 2016 with two children, now ages 14 and 16, who attend the Cathedral schools. They got their first dog, Riley, a couple years ago and she brought a tremendous amount of joy to the children after (and between!) last year’s daily Zoom classes. Katie has always enjoyed volunteering for both her children’s schools and the community. She has been involved in helping to organize a number of activities at Rosedale and looks forward to working on a committee to expand activities at Rosedale.

He was also on the Board of Directors for the “Opera Camerata” and helped to organize operatic fundraisers to benefit charitable organizations. He is currently the owner of Izzy and Milo, two young weimaraners and is an enthusiastic and regular visitor to Rosedale.

Danna has been involved with the Conservancy since its inception in a variety of capacities and currently serves as treasurer.

Roger Pollak
Roger Pollak lives at 3501 Ordway Street. He grew up in Cleveland Park, went to John Eaton School, and spent a lot of time playing at Rosedale. Roger was deeply involved in the efforts to purchase and permanently preserve the Rosedale lawns.
